Review: The Threads of Magic book by Alison Croggon.
The Threads of Magic is a multi-layered novel with a complex plot. This exciting, imaginative and magical adventure comes from one of Australia’s best writers, Alison Croggan, author of The Books of Pellinor and, among others, Black Spring, an extraordinary account of Wuthering Heights. This is her first middle grade novel.
Pip is an extraordinary pocket who lives with his sister El in the city of Clarel. Grab a small silver chest covered in gems. To buy food, he sells the coffin to a merchant who is later found dead. But he has removed the object inside.
Now the lives of both children are in danger by many who seek to possess the Heart of Stone hidden for so long.
The Stone Heart with its magical powers was taken by a witch from Crown Prince Clovis as a child.
When Pip discovers what he now owns, the Heart of Stone begins to communicate with him.
But it is only the Cardinal who knows how to use the magic of the Heart of Stone. The Oracle of Void has shown you the spell used to create it.
Too many lives will be lost and much will be lost, but ultimately more is gained as Pip and El struggle to determine what decisions to make.
Courage, endurance, trust and friendship are strong themes.
Powerful characters, good and bad, drive this exciting fantasy tale. The world that Croggan has created with his dazzling prose is vast and credible with good versus evil at the center.
The whole novel is like a series of stories joined from start to finish. Each scene demonstrates better than the last. Fast paced and full of tension, everything accumulates to a spectacular climax.
Alison Croggan is also a poet, fantasy novelist, and playwright.
