মুন্সি প্রেমচাঁদ বিংশ শতাব্দীর অন্যতম সফল হিন্দি ও উর্দু লেখক। তিনি ছিলেন উর্দু ও হিন্দি সাহিত্যের এক বিরাট লেখক। তাঁর আসল নাম ধনপত রায়, তবে তিনি মুন্সী প্রেমচাঁদ নামে বেশি পরিচিত। হিন্দি উপন্যাসের এই সম্রাটকে আধুনিক হিন্দি সাহিত্যের জনকও বলা হয়। ১৯১০ সালে যখন “বারে ঘরকি বেটি” প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল, তিনি উর্দু সাহিত্যে স্থায়ী অবস্থান অর্জন করেছিলেন। তাঁর বৃহত্তম উপন্যাস হলেন গোদন। তাঁর প্রায় সমস্ত সাহিত্যেরই অনুবাদ ও বহুল প্রচার হয়েছে বাংলা ভাষায়। তাই প্রেমচাঁদ কেবল বাঙালি পাঠকদের কাছেই পরিচিত নয়, একটি অত্যন্ত সম্মানিত নাম। প্রমচাঁদ নিজেই গভীর সাহিত্যের সাথে এবং বাঙালি সাহিত্যের এবং সাহিত্যিক নির্মাতাদের প্রতি অনুরাগী ছিলেন। তাঁর জীবন ও সাহিত্যকর্মে বাঙালি পাঠকদের আগ্রহ দিন দিন বেড়েছে। ক্রমবর্ধমান আগ্রহের বিষয়টি বিবেচনায় নিয়ে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার তাদের গল্পগুলি প্রেমচাঁদের জন্মশতবার্ষিকীতে বাংলা ভাষায় অনুবাদ করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিল। গল্পের স্বাদটি অক্ষত রয়েছে তা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য বিশেষ যত্ন নেওয়া হয়েছিল তবে অনুবাদটি মূল থেকে আলাদা হয়নি.
