১৯৪৭ সালে যখন অবিভক্ত ভারত ভেঙ্গে স্বাধীন ভারত আর পাকিস্তানের সৃষ্টি হয়, সেসময় অনেক হিন্দু বাঙ্গালীই আজকের বাংলাদেশ, যা সেসময় পূর্ব পাকিস্তান ছিল, ছেড়ে ভারত চলে যান। একইসময় ভারত থেকে অনেক মুসলিমরাও পাড়ি দেন উল্টোদিকে। নিজেদের দেশ ছেড়ে আসা এসব মানুষদের অনেকেই ঠাঁই নেন অপরপক্ষের ফেলে যাওয়া বাড়িঘরে, যেগুলিতে তখনো আদি বাসিন্দাদের সংস্কৃতির ছাপ থেকে গিয়েছিল। পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের কোনো এক প্রান্তে তেমনই একটি বাড়ির গল্প আজ – বিখ্যাত লেখক সৈয়দ ওয়ালিউল্লাহ এর কলমে।

The partition of British India in 1947 saw massive migration of Bangalee Hindus from what was then East Pakistan to India, and a flow of Muslims in the opposite direction. Many of these migrants found refuge in the homes abandoned by those who had left – places that still retained vestiges of the lives of the original inhabitants. Syed Waliullah’s Ekti Tulasi Gachher Kahini (A Tulsi Plant’s Tale) is a story of one such house in a corner of what is now Bangladesh, and one in which the absence of what once was is equally powerful as what is now.
