Absalom and Akitophel is a famous satirical poem by John Dryden, composed in heroic verses and first published in 1681. The poem tells the biblical story of Absalom’s rebellion against King David; In this context, it is a fairy tale used to represent Dryden’s contemporary story about King Charles II and the crisis of omission. The poem also mentions the Popish Conspiracy and the Monmouth Rebellion.
John Dryden was an English poet, critic, and playwright in the 2nd half of the 17th century. In the space of almost 40 years, it has achieved great success and recognition in a wide range of genres. As a poet, Dryden is best known as a satirist and was the first winning poet in England in 1668. In addition to satire, Dryden wrote Elegy, Prologues, Essays, Odds, and Panegyrics. His most famous poems are Abbasalam and Achitophel. The Dryden Restoration was so influential in England that the period was known to many as the Dryden Age.
