Vardan / वरदान is an impressive work by Premchand. It can be called a short novel. It can be finished in a day or two. The story is one of childhood love. Boy and girl have grown up together as siblings. Their house was adjoining, there were daily trips to work. Childhood love occurs and then the girl marries elsewhere. There is a story in front of her that has bluntness, stupidity and stabbing pain b. The sad story is already told. It reminds me of RK Narayan’s guide and Dharmavi Bharati’s god of sin. We have all been reading Munshi Premchand’s story in our class since childhood. And at some point along the way we all become familiar with literature for the first time. The hobby of knowingly or unknowingly reading literature grew in us from there. Hardly anyone who has read ‘Hindi Medium’ will not know ‘Hamid’. I don’t remember any other stories, I still remember the ‘Idgah’ that we read as children. No one else can replace Munshi Premchand for me. He was the one I read for the first time … not only did I read, but I understood. And Avadhesh Sir used to say that understanding is not forgotten throughout life. Today we are forgetting our ancient heritage somewhere simply in the quest to read “Nai Wali Hindi”. We must not forget that the writers of “Nai Wali Hindi” have also reached this stage by reading Old Wali Hindi. And Hindi is Hindi … So where did this new and old come from? We just need to study Hindi, be it new or old. Both should be read equally. My salute to the “soldier of the pen”.
