::::: Book Review :::::
4 out of 5 stars for The Zoo Story, written in 1959 by Edward Albee. If you have not read this story, you have missed something intense and truly fascinating. It’s an American classic played on Broadway (and elsewhere), but probably few have read it these days. The story is amazing and it’s not what anyone would expect from the title, not even in general. Two men sit on a bench in Central Park. Uppity businessman taking a break from him. A man approaches, he seems a bit tramp. He wants to talk. The businessman wants to ignore it. The tramp asks useless and painful questions. The businessman wants to leave, but the tramp tickles him. A fight ensues. Something bad happens. A man runs away. The other reflects on what they have learned.
What a comment on society. Forget about age, gender, race, or class. It is a story about how different personalities handle conflict or friendship. Do you get closer or do you stay distant? Do you listen or speak? Do you ignore it or do you immerse yourself? And when something bad happens, what kind of character do you have? You stay or go? Do you deny or admit? All the choices we make in life. Wrapped up in a little play that many of us have not read or seen.
