Traveling on foot, in jeeps, on rafts through the remote Himalayan regions of northern Pakistan, Kathleen Jamie found a country in the tumult of change. She met Sufi mystics and Irish missionaries; young men and women caught between East and West, and women in purdah with whom she lived and befriended. This book won the Scottish Arts Council Book Award in 1992.
It is a great book, well written, and provides a rare insight into how the people of the Gilgit region really live. The author spent some time in Gilgit with the local family. He also spent time in Baltistan and presented a scene from local life that mountaineers often miss completely. A great book.
