Book Review:
Pike is a poem describing violence that is a repetitive theme in Hughes’ poetry. The pike is a fish only three inches long. Its color is a mixture of green and yellow. Pike has been a killer of his own kind since birth. Even a newborn pike has an old, sharp smile. The pike is seen dancing on the surface of the water, shaking around.
Pike is one of Ted Hughes’ favorite animal poems. It was a freshwater fish that he admired and feared, he knew in childhood and he carried with him in his dreams.
The speaker of the poem describes Pike and shares his own experience with Pike. The speaker and his companions placed the three pike in a glass container so that they could supply the pike in large quantities to make it comfortable. One of these three pikes was three inches long, the second was four inches long, and the third was four inches long. Then one day it was discovered that Jar had only two pikes, had a lazy stomach, and had a happy smile as soon as he was born.
