মৈত্রেয়ী দেবী ১৯৮৪ সালে প্রকাশিত একটি আত্মজীবনীমূলক উপন্যাস। লেখক 1986 সালে এটির জন্য সাহিত্য একাডেমী পুরস্কার পেয়েছিলেন। মৈত্রেয়ী দেবী ১৯7৩ সালের সেপ্টেম্বরে রোমানিয়ান দার্শনিক মিরচা ইলিয়াদের রচিত সম্পর্কের উপর ভিত্তি করে উপন্যাস লা নু বাঙালির প্রতিক্রিয়ায় তার বক্তব্য রেখেছিলেন।
১৯৩০ সালে, রোমানিয়ান মিরচা এলিয়াদ মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীর পিতা অধ্যাপক সুরেন্দ্রনাথ দাশগুপ্তের সাথে পড়াশোনা করার জন্য কলকাতায় এসেছিলেন। মৈত্রেয়ী দেবী তখন 17 বছর বয়সে। তাঁর মেয়ের বুদ্ধি নিয়ে গর্বিত, মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীর বাবা তাকে একটি সংস্কার-মুক্ত শিক্ষার পরিবেশে বড় করেছেন। তিনি মেয়েটিকে তার প্রিয় ছাত্র মিরচা এলিয়াদের সাথে লেখাপড়া করতে উত্সাহিত করেছিলেন। মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীর মতে, তিনি এবং মিরচা ইলিয়াড তাঁর বাবার সংগ্রহশালা থেকে দুটি প্রিয় নমুনা ছিলেন। এরই মধ্যে মিরচা এবং মৈত্রেয়ী ঘনিষ্ঠ হয়ে গেল। তাঁর গোপন প্রেম শিখার পরে মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীর বাবা মিরচাকে তার বাড়ি ছেড়ে চলে যেতে বলেছিলেন।
রোমানিয়ানদের সাথে তাঁর সম্পর্কের ভিত্তিতে মিরচর মৈত্রেয়ীর উপন্যাস ১৯৩৩ সালে প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল। ১৯৫০ সালে লা নু বাংলার ফরাসি অনুবাদ হওয়ার পরপরই বইটি ছিল এক দারুণ সাফল্য। ১৯৩৩-৩৯ সালে অধ্যাপক দাশগুপ্ত ইউরোপ সফর করেছিলেন, বইটি সম্পর্কে জানতে পেরেছিলেন এবং নিজের মেয়েকে জানানোর জন্য দেশে ফিরেছিলেন। ১৯৫৩ সালে কিছু ইউরোপ ভ্রমণের সময় কিছু রোমানিয়ান মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীর নাম শুনেছিলেন এবং বলেছিলেন যে তারা তাঁর সম্পর্কে একটি বই পড়েছেন। তবে তারপরেও বইটিতে কী রয়েছে তা আমার কোনও ধারণা ছিল না। ১৯ 197২ সালে সের্গেই যখন কলকাতায় ইলিয়াদের ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু ছিলেন, মিরচা বইটিতে তাদের শারীরিক সম্পর্কের কথা লিখেছিলেন যে মৈত্রেয়ী দেবী তাঁর কাছ থেকে শিখতে পারেন। বন্ধুর সহায়তায় ফরাসি থেকে অনুবাদ, তিনি বইটি পড়েছিলেন এবং গভীরভাবে হতবাক হয়েছিলেন।
১৯ 197৩ সালে মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীকে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর সম্পর্কে কথা বলার জন্য শিকাগো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়েছিল। তাঁর অজানা, তিনি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের তত্কালীন অধ্যাপক মীরচা ইলিয়াদের কার্যালয়ে হাজির হন। মৈত্রেয়ী দেবী যে দু’মাস সেখানে ছিলেন, সেখানে দু’জনের একাধিকবার দেখা হয়েছিল। বইটিতে, তিনি মিরচা কেন তাদের শারীরিক সম্পর্ক সম্পর্কে মিথ্যা কথা বলেছিলেন তা জানতে চান। মীরচা প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীর বইয়ের ইংরেজি অনুবাদ তাঁর জীবদ্দশায় প্রকাশিত হবে না। ১৯৯০ সালে তাঁর মৃত্যুর চার বছর পরে, লা নুই বেঙ্গল বেঙ্গল নাইটস ১৯৯৪ সালে শিকাগো প্রেস বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় দ্বারা ইংরেজিতে প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল।
Maitreyee Devi’s Na Hanyate is a popular Bengali book written by Maitreyee Devi and another popular novel by the author. Na Hanyate, or Doesn’t Die, is a novel written in 1974 by Maitreyi Devi, an Indian poet and novelist who was the protégé of the great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. The writer received the Sahitya Akademi Prize for this novel in 1976. She wrote the novel in response to the book by Romanian philosopher Mircea Eliade La Nuit Bengali (titled Bengal Nights in English), who recounted a fictional account of her romance during the visit of Eliade to India.
