Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en

Book Review:

Journey to the West is one among the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. It was written within the 16th century during the Ming . Its authorship is attributed to Wu Cheng’en. In English-speaking countries, the work is widely known as Monkey King.

The novel may be a fictional account of the legendary pilgrimage to India of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang, and loosely bases its source of the good Tang Records historical text on western regions and traditional folk tales. The monk traveled to the “Western Regions” during the Tang Dynasty, to obtain sacred texts (sūtras). Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), following instructions from the Buddha, entrusts this task to the monk and his three protectors in the form of disciples, namely Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, along with a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang’s steed. a white horse. These four characters have agreed to assist Xuanzang as an atonement for past sins.
