Book Review:
I spent time while I was in Magdalen n He moved to Gaius and he became Bayus Noise. The “Oxford Blues” is one of many new poems in this expanded and revised edition of The State of Poetry, the 70th anniversary of Roger McGuff’s book of short humorous verses, published in 2005 as part of the Penguin’s 1970s series celebrations. From a poem commissioned to commemorate Dylan Thomas to just 140 characters, which unfortunately came to an end in the middle of the word, as a precaution, these poems show McGoff his best innovation and humor, and there’s something new. The author’s line drawing has been given at no extra cost.
Roger McGuff was a member of the Scaffold Group in the 1930s when he gave a poem to the penguin titled The Mercy Sound, which has since sold ten million copies. He has published many books of poetry for children and adults, and his collected poems and two selected poems are also available at Penguin. He has presented Poetry Please on Radio 4 and is President of the Poetry Society. He was honored in 2001 with Freedom of the City of Liverpool and in 2005 with a CBE for his services to literature.
